North Central Presents Lecture on Saving the Children in the Philippines
NORTH CENTRAL PRESENTS LECTURE ON SAVING THE CHILDREN
IN THE PHILIPPINES
Friday’s Luncheon Lecture at North Central Michigan College will feature John Drake, retired senior energy executive, who will talk about his work with orphans and street children in the Philippines, and how he transitioned from a life as a successful American businessman to helping these children rebuild their lives. The lecture on February 24 begins at noon in the Library conference room.
Drake’s job with an international energy company based in Michigan took him to the Philippines where he saw abandoned children living on dangerous streets and begging for food not far from white sand beaches and luxurious hotels. Drake began helping these poor and displaced children by bringing donated boxes of medicine to a local orphanage. Then the mayor of Toledo City asked him to consider taking over the orphanage. Working with local businesses, schools and generous individuals, he raised $300,000 to rebuild the facility and take over its day-to-day operations. The Lingap Center now houses 100 street children and orphans from age six to 18. They live in a supportive environment, attend school and receive regular medical care. Some are now in college. Drake will explain how his determination and the charity of others have changed many lives halfway across the globe.
Cost for the event is $9 and includes lunch. Reservations are strongly encouraged. Call 231-348-6600 or email cmacinnis@ncmich.edu.
