HARBOR SPRINGS FEATURED IN PURE MICHIGAN RADIO SPOT
New Pure Michigan radio spot promotes Harbor Springs as Michigan destination

Harbor Springs, MI - A new Pure Michigan radio spot featuring Harbor Springs hits the airwaves this week. The spot positions Harbor Springs as the Heavenly Harbor of Pure Michigan, highlighting the abundant natural beauty, authentic destinations and unique experiences.

"The Harbor Springs Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to share the new Pure Michigan spot featuring Harbor Springs," commented Scott Langton, who spearheaded the Pure Michigan campaign challenge. Langton and Elizabeth Blair, worked tirelessly to secure donations to fund the ad, one of the newest in the Pure Michigan campaign, that will air primarily in the Grand Rapids, Lansing and Flint markets.

The :60 radio ad touts the area's romantic spirit, boating and waterfront activities, rich history and culture, the art community, shopping and scenic beauty. It also talks to the unspoiled nature, scenic views and drives, and creates an invitation to seek out what Harbor Springs has to offer the visitor.

"The Pure Michigan Harbor Springs ad highlights the natural resources and cultural destinations that makes Harbor Springs unique, and fits into the overall Pure Michigan campaign that communicates what is unspoiled, timeless and true about the state," commented George Zimmermann, vice president of Travel Michigan, a business unit of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. "We are pleased to have Harbor Springs as part of the campaign."

Beloved by children of all ages around the world, Elmo is an international icon. Few people know his creator, Kevin Clash, who dreamed of working with his idol, master puppeteer Jim Henson. Displaying his creativity and talent at a young age, Kevin ultimately found a home on Sesame Street. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, this documentary includes rare archival footage, interviews with Frank Oz, Rosie O'Donnell, Cheryl Henson, Joan Ganz Cooney and others and offers a behind-the-scenes look at Sesame Street and the Jim Henson Workshop. at Carnegie

The Petoskey Film Theater will be showing the documentary film "The Interrupters" on Wednesday, May 9, 7:30 pm at the Petoskey District Library, Carnegie Building (old library, 451 E. Mitchell).  Donations are appreciated.

"The Interrupters" tells the moving and often surprising stories of three "Violence Interrupters"-Ameena Matthews, Eddie Bocanegra, and Cobe Williams--who with bravado, humility, and even humor, work to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they once employed. From acclaimed director Steve James ("Hoop Dreams") and bestselling author Alex Kotlowitz ("There Are No Children Here"), this film is an unusually intimate journey into the stubborn persistence of violence in our cities. Shot over the course of a year, "The Interrupters" follows Ameena, Eddie, and Cobe as they attempt to intervene in disputes before they turn violent, including two brothers threatening to shoot each other, an angry teenage girl just home from prison, and a young man on a warpath of revenge. The film captures not only the Interrupters' work, but reveals their own inspired journeys from crime to hope and ultimately redemption.

BAR ASSOCIATION AWARDS PRIZE TO NORTH CENTRAL STUDENT

The Charlevoix-Emmet County Bar Association has awarded a $1,000 prize to North Central Michigan College student Jennifer O’Rourke for her winning entry in an essay-writing contest. The contest was open to North Central students enrolled in criminal justice, legal assistant or political science classes; the winner was announced during the bar association’s observance of Law Day on May 1 at a luncheon in Harbor Springs.  Jennifer is in the legal assistant program at North Central, pursuing an associate of applied science degree.

Students were asked to write an essay describing Law Day and how awareness of the day can be raised in the United States.  In her essay entitled, “Justice for All,” Jennifer noted that President Dwight Eisenhower designated May 1 as Law Day in 1958 at the suggestion of his legal counsel to honor the vital role of law in our society.

Jennifer said in her essay that her first experience with the workings of the legal system came when she served on a jury. “I received a glimpse of ‘law in action’ that day and I will never forget those impressions.”

Jennifer lives in Gaylord with her husband and two daughters. She hopes to pursue a career as a legal assistant.

North Central Michigan College is an open-door community college based in Petoskey.  Through its University Center partnerships, students can take courses leading to certificates, bachelor’s and master’s degrees from participating universities.  North Central’s Corporate and Community Education division offers non-credit job skills training tailored to meet individual needs.  In addition to its main campus in Petoskey, North Central offers classes, academic advising, testing and other services in Cheboygan, Gaylord and East Jordan.

Fri, 04 May 2012 05:39:05 -0700 McLaren announces plan for Cheboygan http://harborlightnews.posterous.com/mclaren-announces-plan-for-cheboygan http://harborlightnews.posterous.com/mclaren-announces-plan-for-cheboygan News announcement issued by McLaren Health Care:

Flint, Mich-May 3, 2012- McLaren Health Care today announced that the purchase of defined assets of Cheboygan Memorial Hospital has been completed and the process of bringing back health care services to Cheboygan has begun.

After McLaren Health Care and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services reached an administrative understanding, U.S. bankruptcy court removed all impediments to the sale. All appropriate papers have been signed, and new services can now begin.

The Cheboygan facility will be known as McLaren-Northern Michigan, Cheboygan Campus. It will functionally be a department of McLaren-Northern Michigan, a 202-bed regional referral center, a subsidiary hospital of McLaren Health Care in Flint.

The primary and specialty care physician model of care currently in effect in the Cheboygan community can now be expanded. Services to be re-established will include

Emergency Services, laboratory and imaging services, and ambulatory and outpatient surgery services.

Staffing plans include additional hiring, for a total of approximately 150 former employees of Cheboygan Memorial Hospital. As the potential for expanded services evolves, this number could grow in the future.

During the week of May 7, physician practices will begin to relocate to the Medical Arts Building in Cheboygan and the Indian River Community Medical Center. Emergency Services are targeted to open the week of May 14, as well as lab and imaging services. Surgical Services are expected to begin the week of May 29.

By focusing resources on high quality emergency, outpatient, diagnostic and physician-based services, this new model of health care delivery in Cheboygan is designed to ensure long-term sustainability of health care services for the community. As such, inpatient services will be available at McLaren-Northern Michigan in Petoskey.

“I want to recognize the tremendous effort by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services in working with McLaren to re-establish the provision of health care,” said Phil Incarnati, President and CEO of McLaren Health Care. “The dedication and hard work of elected officials played an essential role in making this agreement a reality. The advocacy of Representative Frank Foster (R-Petoskey) on behalf of the Cheboygan and Presque Isle area residents since the initial bankruptcy announcement has made a significant impact on this favorable outcome.”

“The confirmation of the sale between Cheboygan Memorial Hospital and McLaren Health Care is great news for the community, employees, and most importantly, the residents,” Foster stated. “These vital services, and the goal of these negotiations, have always been to ensure the quality of health care for the area.”

Thomas Mee, a McLaren representative who is serving as the McLaren-Northern Michigan, Cheboygan Campus, Interim Administrator stated, “I’m delighted we got to this point. We were always committed to keeping health care in this community and I’m glad to see that back.”

Reezie DeVet, President & CEO of McLaren-Northern Michigan, further stated, “I would like to thank the Cheboygan and Presque Isle County community for their support and confidence during these negotiations. We have enjoyed a long-standing history of collaboration with our regional partners in health care, and I look forward to the tremendous positive impact we can now make in northern Michigan with the support of McLaren Health Care, one of the top 25 leading health care systems in the entire country.”

Sunday, May 13       3-4:30pm

Recommended for all ages // Ransom Nature Preserve
(located between Petoskey and Charlevoix)
Not only for mothers – bring the whole family to celebrate the newness and fresh air of spring. Join botanist Roger Knutson on a moderate hike through the 1½ miles of hilly trails at the Ransom Nature Preserve with great views of Lake Michigan.  Roger will guide us through the wonders of Northern Michigan flowers and open our eyes to the beauty we see but can’t always name. For more information, contact Cacia Lesh at 231-344-1000 or cacia@landtrust.org. $5 suggested donation. This is a program of the 2012 Plant Heritage Week and is presented by the Little Traverse Conservancy.

Since 1972, the Little Traverse Conservancy has been working as the oldest regional, non-profit land trust in Michigan. With the support of more than 4,100 members, the Little Traverse Conservancy works with private landowners, state, and local government to permanently protect ecologically significant and scenic lands from development. Since it was founded, more than 40,400 acres and 105 miles of shoreline along our region’s lakes, rivers, and streams have been set aside to remain in their natural state within Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, Mackinac, and Chippewa counties. In addition, more than 6,000 young people participate in a Conservancy environmental education outing every year. For more information about the Little Traverse Conservancy and land protection options for your land, please contact their office at 231.347.0991 or visit www.landtrust.org
