Crooked Tree Arts Center presents Brent James & The Contraband, Petoskey, Nov. 19

Crooked Tree Arts Center is proud to present Brent James and the ContraBand on stage,  Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 8:00 pm.

Brent James and the ContraBand played at Petoskey’s Festival on the Bay in August of 2011 and opened for Ted Nugent at DTE Energy Music Theatre in September of 2011.   "He's a rocking young kid," Nugent said of James. "Our manager spotted him and since I don't get around to see other acts much between tours, I took his word for it when he said we should get Brent on the tour. He was right. Brent is a great performer and he really impressed me with the Detroit thing he has going on. You can feel that energy, the drive you saw in Mitch Ryder, the MC5, Grand Funk Railroad and the Romantics.”   Their single “Moment of Silence” is currently picked up by stations across the Country.

The band includes local favorite Jason Kott on Bass, Matt Hayes,: Drums; and Mike Puwal, Guitars.

Brent James Biography

Brent James knew what he wanted from an early age. He began singing with his mother in the front seat of their car and around the house while his father worked as an autoworker in Saginaw Michigan. James had a pretty good grasp on where he came from, always embracing his blue-collar roots. He began writing songs at the age of 9 while mowing lawns and doing chores for family all while telling his parents he would “move to NYC and become a singer one day.”

After fronting a couple bands and getting some touring under his belt, Brent knew it was time to make a leap. He packed up his bags and made the move to New York City. He began concentrating on song writing and honing his front man skills drawing on influences from Joe Cocker, Springsteen. Dylan & Mellencamp amongst many others. James: “There was never any shortage of amazing music playing around my house growing up. My parents had unbelievable taste. They introduced me to all the greats. I remember it totally making my head spin around”. Picture Bob Seger getting into a fist fight with the Beach Boys and that’s my son. He can go gritty or pretty….” says Brent’s dad Robert.

In 2009 a few of Brent’s raw acoustic demo’s that he made on his computer fell into the hands of Grammy Award Winning Producer Skidd Mills. Brent and Skidd hit it off immediately and began recording his debut full length at the Sound Kitchen in Nashville Tennessee. “We moved so fast and it felt so easy it was a no brainer for me. You just know when you connect with someone musically and this was a live wire,” says James.

The Petoskey Film Theater will be showing the documentary film "The Last Mountain" on Wednesday and Friday, November 16 and 18, 7:30 pm, at the Petoskey District Library, Carnegie Building (451 E. Mitchell St.).  Donations are appreciated.

"The Last Mountain" is a spellbinding tour along the frontlines of America's most spirited battle over the environment and the economy. Set deep in the heart of Appalachian West Virginia, this consciousness-raising film captures a rowdy band of citizens as they try to stop a giant coal company from blowing up a pristine mountain for its coal. A tale of greed and courage, folly and forward-thinking, "The Last Mountain" is brimming with the coal hard facts and vivid testimony from the hardscrabble people whose lives are intertwined with coal.  Featuring environmental activist and lawyer Robert Kennedy Jr. and the stunning visuals of Appalachia, "The Last Mountain" is informative, stirring, and most importantly, inspiring. Not only a searing indictment of America's energy policy, this powerful film also points the way to a brighter, greener future.

Historian to speak on Train Ferries at the Straits

MACKINAW CITY – Brian Jaeschke, an historian and registrar of Mackinac State
Historic Parks, will speak on Monday, Nov. 14, to the Mackinaw Area Historical
Society on the history of the railroad ferries at the Straits, including the
Chief Wawatam, the St. Ignace and two ferries named Ste. Marie.

The hour-long illustrated presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the meeting
room of the Mackinaw Area Public Library, located at 528 West Central Avenue in
Mackinaw City. Refreshments will be served.

Jaeschke, who has a master’s degree in maritime studies, said the train ferries
provided year-round service between Mackinaw City and St. Ignace from the late
1800s to 1984. Operation of ferries on the Straits was a severe challenge
because of the heavy ice buildup in winter.

Jaeschke said the Chief Wawatam, which began service in 1911, was revolutionary
in design, with its bow propeller able to both maneuver the boat and suck water
out from underneath the ice to enable it to be broken through force of gravity.

The Wawatam was 338 feet in length and had a beam of 62 feet. Her three
propellers, two in the stern and one on the bow, were driven by coal-fired
triple-expansion steam engines. The Chief is believed to have been the last
hand-fired, coal-burning boat in commercial service on the Great Lakes.

The train ferries carried freight cars, not locomotives, and from the 1930s to
1952, were used to transport automobiles from December through April, when the
car ferries did not operate. In 1952, the car ferry Vacationland, built for
icebreaking, entered service.

Jaeschke said the train ferries ended up as barges or were scrapped. The Chief
Wawatam’s wheel, bell, furniture and pilot house equipment have been stored by
the State Historic Parks, and several items are on display in the Old Mackinaw
Point Lighthouse in Mackinaw City.

Five of the Chief Wawatam artifacts are on annual loan to the City of St Ignace
and are displayed in a kiosk on the old railroad docks in St. Ignace.

Jaeschke’s master’s thesis was on the Chief Wawatam and the Ste. Marie, and
icebreaking for lake freighters, before the cutter

Mackinaw took over the duties.

Jaeschke’s thesis is the basis for a Great Lakes ice-breaking documentary
currently in production.
